During a recent episode of the Big Time Podcast, Inter Miami’s standout player Lionel Messi opened up about his thoughts on retirement.
The famous Argentine soccer star appears to be in the twilight of his impressive career. Following the expiration of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, he made the decision to join the MLS in the summer of 2023.
Despite being 36 years old, the World Cup champion is still making a significant impact on his team’s performance. Since his move to Florida, Messi has scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in 19 matches across various competitions.
However, there have been concerns about his fitness as he has been struggling with injuries. He is currently sidelined and was unable to participate in Argentina’s recent matches during the international break. This has led to speculation about whether Messi’s playing days may be coming to an end.
Discussing his future retirement, the legendary eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient shared, “I am quite hard on myself, able to recognize my performances whether they are good or bad. When I sense the time is right, I will make that decision without being influenced by age.” He further expressed, “I am aware that when the joy and contribution to my team diminish, it will be time for me to step back.”
Supporters of the soccer legend are eagerly anticipating Messi’s ongoing career, especially with his long-time competitor Cristiano Ronaldo excelling at 39 years old. With an impressive record of 720 club goals and 345 assists, Messi has secured 10 La Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League victories with Barcelona.
