It is truly shocking to witness the lack of empathy displayed by some individuals. Those involved in animal rescue work often encounter heart-wrenching scenarios that can be emotionally draining. Despite repeated exposure to such situations, it remains difficult to accept that there are individuals who exhibit an unfeeling attitude towards animals. Recently, a malnourished dog was discovered struggling to keep her litter of puppies alive during the winter season. This two-year-old canine, now affectionately named Celeste, was found abandoned and severely underweight on New Year’s Eve. She was brought to the BC SPCA in Nanaimo, British Columbia to receive the necessary care and support she desperately needed.
Evidently, the small pack of dogs had been abandoned by someone on the side of the road and left to fend for themselves. A few compassionate passersby attempted to assist the mother dog, but unfortunately, she bared her teeth and rejected any food they offered. The dog was promptly rescued and taken to a local shelter where she was examined. The Manager of the Nanaimo BC SPCA, Bonnie Pequin, stated that the mother dog was living outside and was severely malnourished. She also remarked that the mother dog was doing everything in her power to care for her puppies and protect them. Pequin expressed how heart-wrenching it was and how it gave her chills to see the pitiful state of the dogs.
Fortunately, Celeste and her litter of puppies were able to find a temporary home with Elaine Nelson-Hosak and her loved ones. Elaine described how Celeste would come close and rest her head on her while giving her the most affectionate gaze. Despite experiencing hunger due to limited food access, Celeste remains composed and waits quietly for her meals to be served. Elaine happily exclaimed, “She’s such a wonderful pup!”
The BC SPCA has stated that Celeste will remain in foster care until she regains a healthy body weight, which will take around a month. The puppies, on the other hand, will be ready for adoption in the coming year. Pequin expressed gratitude that Celeste and her puppies are receiving the necessary care and shelter during this time of year, emphasizing that no animal should be left in the cold without sustenance.
